Covin is not afraid to push past comfort and delve into the dark places of the malicious, but he does so with an anguish that draws you into the despair of his characters that neither dwells on nor glorifies the graphic horror.
Writing scenes that are visually intense or challenging to his characters gives Dean an outlet for his inner wrathful god. Who doesn’t secretly desire to manipulate a world, create seemingly insurmountable obstacles and play out their hero’s drive to overcome? And, like his readers, Dean is always holding out for those happy endings … though they don’t always come.
Often, he enjoys developing archetypal characters who present a recognizable face on the surface, but, just when you think you have them pegged, they hint at something deeper during the slow reveal.
Dean chose to write Pieces of Ivy because certain observations about society started to bother him and he wanted to tell a tale that would tease out those possibilities without preaching the obvious on a wide scale. The story that unfolded offered so many additional avenues for covert thought on subjects that are important to him that he has planned out a series of at least two more novels beyond Ivy.
